Ned Schwing mentioned in his reference e book to the Design 1890 & 1906 that Winchester started proof marking them in 1908… I have no idea if that's correct, but will believe that it's. The “WP” evidence mark was utilized once the barrel and receiver have been mated, assembled and completed. This is very obvious around the firearms created in the late teenagers via early 30s in the event the blue flaked (popped) off when the proof was struck within the receiver body.
